Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006)

Mimmo Rotella is best known for his extravagant “double décollages,” which he crafted by ripping posters (particularly movie advertisement) off exterior walls, attaching the fragments to canvases, and then tearing off smaller pieces from the posters to create colourful, often amusing, collages. She is an important protagonist of Nouveau Realism. Marked by cubism and geometric abstraction, Rotella (who took on an artistic career relatively late in the game) realized his first works from décollées posters in an urban setting in the middle of the 1950s.
